Yoni Fogelman is an accomplished composer, arranger, and pianist based in Los Angeles, California. His passion for knowledge and interest in the world around him has fueled a diverse portfolio of choral and orchestral works, chamber ensemble pieces, and big bands charts.
He has studied piano and voice for the past six years working with many expert choir directors, composers, arrangers, musicians, and choreographers in the Los Angeles area. He began writing choral music as a member of John Burroughs High School's award-winning chamber choir, “Powerhouse,” for whom he has composed four original works. His first piece, “Soar,” earned an Award of Merit at the California state level in the national Reflections competition, and the following pieces have been performed at festivals throughout Southern California. Yoni's success at Burroughs earned him a spot in the Pasadena Master Chorale's "Listening to the Future" Composer Fellowship. The Master Chorale is currently preparing an arrangement of an American folk song and a new composition by Yoni. Yoni's passion for learning transcends an interest in choral music alone, and he has demonstrated comparable success in the world of chamber music, big band composition, and film scoring. In 2019, Yoni was selected alongside top young composers in the LA area to participate in the Sunset Chamber Festival for which he wrote a violin duet, "As Mist Falls Over Calm Water." Three months later, he began a year-long fellowship with the LA Philharmonic as one of its Young Composers, and is now the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles' 2021 Steven Stucky Composer Fellow. Yoni is currently developing a Young Composer's Fellowship of his own through the Musicians at Play Foundation, for whom he is a board member. He also enjoys jazz arranging lessons from acclaimed Hollywood orchestrator and jazz arranger Ladd McIntosh. Through these lessons, he has developed the skills necessary to write and arrange for his high school Jazz Band (see "Free Trade" and "Evil Woman"). Finally, his experiences scoring student films have engendered a love for film scoring that drives his occupational objectives. You can hear some of Yoni's scores and rescores on the "Listen" page as they appear in student films and old movies. Yoni treats music as a craft that requires a holistic understanding, and he takes a hands-on approach to his music whenever possible. When he is not singing in the chamber choir or playing lead keyboard for the jazz band, he is teaching the ensembles his pieces. For Yoni, composition is not a solo endeavor, but a medium through which he can nurture relationships with fellow writers, teachers, and performers, and he plans to treat music as a social, analytical, and emotional endeavor throughout his life. |
